Review: Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor

I have been a fan of the matte lip over the sheeny/glossy lip for years, so am ALL about this matte liquid lipstick revolution happening at the moment. If you follow me on Instagram, you will know that I have bought my fair share of them in the past few months and was very excited to try out Revlon’s version after reading a bunch of rave reviews.

My thoughts

My first impressions were that the packaging is such a nice change for Revlon – so much more sleek with a more high-end feel, which I love. The shade range is also spot-on – addressing all the trends of the moment; from the perfect dusty rose (Devotion) to the best browny-nude (Seduction) and a whole bunch of shades in between, but the more nudey shades are what I’m all about at the moment. Having said that, the shade Obsession is just gorgeous! See below swatches.

On application, I thought the actual doe-foot applicator was perfectly fine, similar to the one used in the Kat Von D liquid lipstick. The actual formula is really beautiful – initially I was a bit disappointed on applying this product as on application these feel very balm-like. Maybe I am used to other liquid lipsticks (Stila, Sephora, Kat Von D etc) that literally dry down to the driest of mattes imaginable, whereas this formula doesn’t dry-down at all – it’s certainly not shiny and definitely more on the semi-matte side but if you are used to the ‘drying down’ formulas then I do think you need to be warned first about this. Not a negative, but something to be noted. I actually know many people hate the formulas that dry down so this may be the best news yet for you. After a few minutes of having this on my lips, however, the shine did subside, minus the dry effect which is a kind of refreshing change. The end result is a super-opaque colour, packed with beautiful pigment. It’s a perfect hybrid between a thick balm and a matte lipstick, so definitely worth trying, as I just loved how wearable these are. It didn’t dry out my lips at all which is why I assume these have become so popular! The longevity can’t be likened to that of the dry-down formula’s but that is expected and I’m OK with that. I must also mention the scent which I am not a fan of, but can totally see past this as it doesn’t linger long! It’s a super sweet strawberry-like scent, so nothing offensive and one some of you may actually like, just not for me. Price wise these go for R155 which is such good value for money. I am definitely planning on picking up a few more shades – big thumbs up, Revlon!

I have also tried my colleague's one and it never dried down, a bit disappointed with it. I do love the MAC matte liquid lipsticks though

Yes, guess it's down to preference as some people hate the drying down formulas, I quite like them though as it stays in place and looks super matte
