HemelHuijs
Not another restaurant…
When someone talks of a great experience at a restaurant or cafe, I am all ears! It’s one way to know, rest assured, that the experience will be good – specially when the referral is coming from two friends whose opinion I can trust. Kel and Lof recommended HemelHuijs and it didn’t take longer than a week for me to pay them a visit!
Situated on Waterkant Road, on the fan walk (Buitengracht corner) is this little restaurant, owned by the same guy (Jacques Erasmus) who started Manna on Kloof Street. This open plan, beautifully decorated reastaurant is very inviting and has such a buzz to it. It’s not one of those places I would choose to go to if I was feeling hungover and ravenous (although let’s be honest – thats normally Beleza’s or Arnolds!!), but for a delicious meal with delicate flavours, gourmet cakes in bell jars and cappuccino’s to-die-for (or alternatively a glass of bubbly) this is the place to go.
A definite cool-cape-town vibe with decor that left me wanting to start designing my kitchen right there and then! My favourite being the vases in the shape of face’s filled with vintage roses with a kudu (some kind of buck, who knows…) head on the wall above.
I ate the green bean, roasted tomato and goats cheese dish, I must admit I did think it was a salad – however wasn’t disappointed when this amazing meal arrived. The flavours were amazing, and goats cheese like I’ve never tasted before. Instead of the signature coco-nut bread that Manna are famous for, they put a bowl of assorted breads; ranging from linseed loaf to almond melba toast. I cannot wait to see what else they have to offer…
I will definitely be a regular, with it being a mere 2 minute walk from my house :)Thanks Kel and Lof – definitely visiting with you two next time!
